What will the water conditions be on race day? Water temperature is expected to be between 75 – 80 degrees.
What is the expected air temperature for race day? Low 65, high 85 degrees.
Will the race be held in the rain? Yes, if it is a light rain and no lightning. The Safety Director will monitor weather conditions. If extreme weather comes through, it is at the Safety Director’s discretion to cancel the race.
What kind of starts and finishes will each race have? All races will have in-water starts and finishes. Six orange buoys will mark the in-water finish gate. After the swimmer finishes, they will exit the river via the Market Street boat ramp.
Where does each race start and finish? All Zone races start from GPS boat dock to Market Street bridge; the Rat Race starts at Rivermont Park. For course maps, click here.

What is the entry deadline? We're sorry, but registration is now closed. .
Can I register on race day? Sorry, no. Due to logistics, we cannot accept late entries. Entry deadline is May 22.
Do I have to be a USMS member to register? Yes. If you are not an annual member, you can purchase a One-Event USMS registration for $20, plus processing fees, during the registration process. If you’d like to become an annual USMS member, go to www.usms.org/reg/.
Can I get a refund if I can’t attend? No, we cannot issue refunds. However, if you are entered in the Rat Race, you can transfer your entry to another person if you do it by May 25th. Contact Jay Nevans at firstname.lastname@example.org to transfer.
When and where do I pick up my race packet? Outdoor Chattanooga in Coolidge Park, 200 River Street, Chattanooga, TN 37405. 423-643-6888. Check-in will be open the following times:

Friday, June 1 / 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for Southern Zone participants

What time do the races start?
Southern Zone 1K swim - 4:00 p.m. Friday
USMS 1K swim - 4:45 p.m. Friday
Southern Zone 3K (11/12) and 5K (13+) - 8:10 a.m. Saturday (see Southern Zone timeline for heat times)
USMS Chattanooga Rat Race - 4.5 Mile – 12: 00 noon Saturday
Southern Zone 3K Pursuit Race - 8:55 a.m. Sunday (see Southern Zone timeline for heat times)
Is there a time limit? There is a 1 hour time limit for the 1K and a 3 hour time limit for the Chattanooga Rat Race. There is no time limit for the Southern Zone races.
When and where can we warm-up before the race?
Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at Warner Park and 2:30 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. in the river
Saturday, 6:45 a.m. - 7:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. in the river
Sunday, 7:50 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. in the river
Note: safety personnel will only be provided during official warm up periods and race times in the designated areas. Any swimming done outside of these times and areas is at your own risk.
What do I do with my swim bag? For the Chattanooga Rat Race, your bag can stay with you until the start of the race. It will be waiting for you at the finish. For the Southern Zone, bags will need to be left with your coach.
Will there be an awards ceremony? Yes, 30 minutes after the last finisher for each race except the 1K. No awards are given in the 1K race.
Who will receive awards? For the Southern Zone Championships, awards will be given for top eight in each age group for the 3K and 5K individual events. Awards will be given for the top 3 teams in each age group for the Pursuit Race.
For the Chattanooga Rat Race, awards will be given to the top 3 overall male and female, and for 1st place in each age group. Age groups are in 10 year increments (18 – 29, 30 – 39, and so on).
No awards will be given in the 1K race.
Are wet suits allowed? Wetsuits are allowed for the Chattanooga Rat Race only, if the water temperature is below 78 degrees. However, swimmers in wet suits will not be eligible for awards.
Will medical services be on-site? An ambulance staffed with EMS personnel will be at the finish line at all races.
Where can we park for the races? There is a paid lot next to Outdoor Chattanooga ($5 for the entire day). You can also utilize the parking garage across Frazier Avenue next to Regions Bank.
Where can friends watch the race? Spectators will be able to view the races from the race start at GPS boat dock to the race finish at Market Street Bridge. There is a walking path around the perimeter of Coolidge Park that runs along part of the race course. Spectators can also walk across the Market Street and Walnut Street bridges to view the races from above.
